Fall in Blairsville: Your Guide to Autumn in the North Georgia Mountains

Crisp mornings, golden ridgelines and evenings by the fire. Here is how to make the most of autumn in Blairsville, from mountain viewpoints to waterfall walks.

Fall in Blairsville: Your Guide to Autumn in the North Georgia Mountains

Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year in the North Georgia mountains. The air turns crisp, the hillsides around Blairsville fill with reds, oranges and golds, and the evenings are made for sitting by the fire. If you are planning a fall getaway, here are some of our favorite ways to spend it.

When to see the leaves

Fall color in the mountains around Blairsville usually peaks from mid to late October and often lasts into early November, depending on the weather. Higher elevations change first, so a drive up into the hills can show you a different palette from the one in town. Weekday visits are quieter if you would like the scenic spots to yourself.

Brasstown Bald

At 4,784 feet, Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia, and on a clear day the observation deck gives you views across four states. In autumn it is one of the best places in the region to see the color spread out across the ridges. The walk up from the parking area is short but steep, so take your time and bring a layer, as it is often cooler at the top.

Vogel State Park and Helton Creek Falls

Vogel State Park sits at the foot of Blood Mountain and is one of Georgia's oldest state parks. Its trails range from easy loops to longer hikes, and the fall foliage there is lovely. Nearby, Helton Creek Falls is a short, easy walk to two pretty cascades and makes a perfect stop on a scenic drive.

The Appalachian Trail

The famous Appalachian Trail runs through the mountains just south of Blairsville. At Neels Gap the trail passes right through the historic stone building that houses the Mountain Crossings outfitter, which is well worth a visit even if you only plan to walk a short stretch. Experienced hikers can continue up to Blood Mountain, the highest point on the trail in Georgia.

Downtown Blairsville

Blairsville's historic town square is a relaxed place to spend an afternoon, with local shops, places to eat and the old Union County Courthouse at its center. October is also the time of the town's long-running Sorghum Festival, a much-loved local tradition, so check local listings for this year's dates if you would like to catch it.

Lakes and scenic drives

Lake Nottely and nearby Lake Chatuge are surrounded by wooded hills that look spectacular in the fall. Even if you are not heading out on the water, the lakeside roads make for a beautiful drive, especially in the late afternoon light.

Coming home to the cabin

After a day outdoors, there is nothing better than coming back to the cabin. Light the fire pit and watch the stars, soak in the private hot tub with the cool mountain air around you, or curl up inside by the electric fireplace. The covered deck is the perfect spot for a morning coffee while the mist lifts off the trees.
